2022 Disabled Veteran Controlled Moose Hunt
Image
On March 1st, the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services (MBVS) will begin accepting applications for the 2022 Disabled Veterans Controlled Moose Hunt held in Aroostook County. Since the program’s inception in 2010, MBVS has partnered with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife (IF&W) and Smoldering Lake Outfitters to issue hunting permits and essential equipment to participating veterans. The hunt, which is entirely free for selected veterans, and costs roughly $50,000 to administer. Costs associated with the hunt include guiding services, essential adaptive equipment, meat processing, travel, and lodging.

Unlike the regular IF&W moose lottery, the Disabled Veterans
Controlled Moose Lottery is limited to only those veterans with a
disability rating of at least 50%. Each hunter is required to team up with a registered Maine Guide who has specific training for the hunt, and if a veteran has ever tagged a moose through the program, that veteran is ineligible to hunt again in the program.

Applications will be accepted starting March 1st and must be submitted to the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services by 4:00PM on Friday, April 30th. The application can be downloaded from the Bureau’s website:
Completed applications can then be uploaded directly to the Bureau's "Document Upload" page.

Results of the lottery will be posted no earlier than
Friday, May 28th.

MBVS is Awarded
A VA Pillar of Excellence
Image

MBVS is proud to announce that Maine is one of eight states that will receive the VA Abraham Lincoln Pillars of Excellence Award for the Maine Veterans’ Dental Network! The award was presented to Steven Lanning, Acting Deputy Director, who attended the National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs mid-winter conference February 21, 2022.

The MVDN has had a robust response since the December 27th press release announcing the replenishment of its grant funding and has been recording requests for dental care over the past two months from veterans from across the State of Maine. The program was hard at work in February, connecting veterans who have submitted their application and a copy of their DD-214 to the nearest participating dental clinic in their area.

Seven new dental clinics were also added to the MVDN roster: Katahdin Valley Health Center (with five locations - Houlton, Patten, Ashland, Brownville, and Millinocket); St. Croix Regional Family Health Center (Princeton); and Greater Portland Health (Portland) for a total of 22 dental clinics working together to help address the oral healthcare needs of Maine’s Veterans.

State of Maine to Participate in Governor's Challenge

Image

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and VA Office of Suicide Prevention have partnered together to develop the Governor’s Challenge,
a collaboration that
started in 2018 and was piloted in a
handful of sites across the
country. The initial program
had seven original strategies which have been honed to incorporate three: Lethal means safety and training, screening, and care continuum.

The premise behind this program is a collaborative effort between existing agencies internal and external to state government, use other states best practices, and engage with subject matter experts to create a suicide prevention plan for each state. MBVS is leading the effort to establish the membership for Maine’s Policy Academy, with appointees from Governor Mills’ office, Cabinet-level members, participation from applicable state agencies, Maine National Guard, and established partner organizations external to the state. Maine’s Policy Academy will be assigned a State Liaison from the Service Member Veterans Technical Center.

Members of this Policy Academy will develop a Strategic Action Plan over the next two years that will guide efforts to reducing the veteran suicide rate in Maine.
